Shingle roof

Shingle Roofing

Shingle roof are made from Ironwood Shingles.
Ironwood is one of the most durable and strongest timbers on the planet. You can expect a 20+ year lifspan from these roofs as long as you keep a small amount of maintenance up, which is to re-oil every 6 months or so with garden spray or paint roller and 50/50 Turps and Linseed Oil. Alternatively you can have the rood varnished or painted while it is in Bali.
All our Shingle roofs made with the following layers . 1.Bamboo matting for underside 2. Sheets of 3ml ply wood 3. Sarking to protect ply. 4 Battens that the Shingles are nailed to.5. Shingles that are 5ml thick and nailed on.
The pitch on all roofs is set at 40° but can go as low as 30°.

Alang Alang Roofing

Alang Alang roof are the Traditional thatched roofs. The thatch is commonly known as Alang Alang grass in Bali and is a common weed. You can expect up to a 12 year life span and 15 degrees cooler underneath than conventional roofs. All thatch roofs are hand made. The thatch runs are tied onto the roof rafters with strips of Bamboo. You will not find this element in a Gazebo built here as only the Balinese can master this.
The pitch on thatch roof is set at 40° to maximize water proofing
during rain run off.
The thatch is a grass so do expect it to break down over time. A common myth is that birds steal the grass for nests but it is like pampas grass - sharp and rough hence vermin don't like it much either.

Timber Strength Groups

There are two strength groups which are mainly used by engineers working with timber accordance with Australian standards.
These are The F group and The SD group. F group is for the structural integrity and the SD group for durability. The higher the number the better the timber. Because we import our huts from Bali we though it important that you understand the quality of the timber we use as you would not be familiar with it.

Coconut Wood

Coconut wood is very different in structure to that of usual hardwoods which belong to the dicotyledon group of plants. Coconut wood belongs to the monocotyledons group of plants most of which are grasses and herbs.
There is a vary considerable density gradient from the hardwood on the outer to a much softer timber in the core. The densities are also effected by the height of where the timber is obtained from on thr trunk.
Ubud Huts only uses timber from the outer edge of the tree and only the first third of the trunk. This timber is known to have F17 structural grade and a SD4 durability rating however with Borate Pressure Treatment applied to the poles it increases the gradings ot F24 and SD2.

Other Hardwoods

Ubud Huts uses 4 different types of hardwoods. All of which have been assessed for structural integrity and durability in accordance with Australian Standards. We use different timber because of market availablity in Bali. In doing so we always comply with our
strutural standards.
No timber used is less than F17 or SD3 F being structural strength and SD is for durability of dried timbers. For those who are not up to date on timber grading Radiata pine is F7 and SD6 and Jarrah is F24 and SD3
All timber for poles and deck bearers is F34 and SD2 this is for maximum durability as the timber used is also white ant resistant

White Ants

MM a common problem we have learnt to live with. Timbers in Australia are mostly treated with arsenic and chromium (chromated copper arsenate, or CCA). Ubud huts use Boric acid, oxides and salts (borates) are effective wood preservatives and are supplied under numerous brand names throughout the world. Borate treated wood is of low toxicity to humans, and does not contain copper or other heavy metals. So no leaching of dangerouse chemical in to the ground water.

DIY and Installation

Either option is available. Although we do encourage that you grab a team of people together and DIY whilst employing one of our contractors to oversea the job.
This is very cost effective and you are assured the hut will go up correctly and efficiently.
For the DIY man you will need 3 -4 people - two rubber mallets -a hammer - electric drills - ladders - scaffolding if more then a 3m x 3m hut - patience and a sense of humour.

If however you do not have the resources for DIY we can arrange full installation.

Council Matters

Yes.... Council does matter. Some councils are easy and others have strict guidelines. As example: one shire may not need you to submit for approval on any structure less than 3m x 3m where as others do want you to submit for approval and may also want you to submit for planning approval as well.
Please phone your local council or visit there web site and navigate to building regulations. A balinese hut will come under the class of a patio.

When considering any structure please remember that your pole must be 1m from any easement/fence line and the roof line .5m, these are the minimum requirements of most councils however you can go as closer as long as you also submit for planning approval which is just a matter of asking your neighbors f they dont mind you the structure being closer to the bounry and paying the council some extra fees.

If you wish to gain council approval before you order your hut a $100 deposit will need to be paid to release a plan for submission, this is then deducted from your deposit when you place an order.
If you feel you can not arrange for council approval we are able to submit for you for an extra cost of $100 plus all fees and associated costs.
